How to Test Your Car’s Battery

If your car’s battery seems sluggish now after the long winter, it could be time to have it tested. There are a couple of ways to check your vehicle’s charging system. Before you begin, it’s recommended to make sure the cells’ fluid levels are topped off.

If you have a voltmeter, you will want to see it registering at a minimum of 12.6 volts on a charged battery. When you check the volts on a battery with the engine running, it should read 13.7 to 14.7. You can also get a general idea of how the system’s charging without a voltmeter. Simply start the engine and turn on the headlights. When they’re dim, or their brightness fluctuates as you rev the engine, that’s an indicator that the system’s running on the battery without the alternator’s charge. You want a steady and bright illumination.
