Do you have a roadside emergency kit in your car? If not, now might be a good time to put one together.
It's usually hard to see a vehicle breakdown coming, so it's easy to get caught off-guard and end up stranded somewhere trying to figure out a way to fix a problem or you get stuck waiting in a potentially unsafe spot for help to arrive.
A roadside emergency kit can help you prepare for these situations. These are a few items to add:
- First-aid kit: Gauze pads, aspirin, antiseptic ointment, and a healthy assortment of bandages should make it in as well as any items that are specific to the needs of you and your family.
- Reflective warning triangles: Keep three of these so you can set them up about 50 feet apart and warn oncoming traffic to give you room.
- Jumper cables: Ten-foot cables with eight-gauge rubber coating will do just fine.
- Food and drink: Bring nonperishable snacks and drinking water with you. You never know how long you might be waiting around.
- Rain poncho: This will make your life worlds easier if you break down in the rain. Even an inexpensive one will help.
